On August 1, 2023 District 20 Attorney, Craig Ladd, announced his retirement despite only being a little more than half way through his term. This choice greatly benefitted his appointed replacement, Melissa Handke, who may have struggled to be elected to the position with the cloud of the 2022 OSBI investigation still not publicly announced as closed.
